VSA South Carolina: The State Organization on Arts and Disability (VSA SC) works very closely with the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind (SCSDB) and the Community Healing Arts Program (CHAP), an outreach of Spartanburg Regional Foundation, all located in Spartanburg, SC. Occasionally, VSA SC and The Community Healing Arts Program will send a variety of artists to SCSDB.
The students that are hearing impaired and / or deaf enjoy the artists but have had limited experiences with artists who are deaf.
Through the VSA Southern Region Artist Exchange Innovative Project, ten states received national funding to implement an artists workshop and short-term residencies for students with disabilities.
VSA SC will send an artist from Louisiana, that not only speaks to the deaf students but, WITH them.
On April 11 and 12, Susan Chevallier, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana will assist the students in creating a new body of work that will tour the state in order to bring awareness to SCSDB and to VSA South Carolina, which is celebrating its 25 year of service.
The plan is for some of the new body of art work to be created with an artist that the students can embrace as one of their own and have an experience working with who communicates in American Sign Language the same as they do. Ms. Chevallier is a visual artist who is also deaf.
The training workshop for artists will include discussion on ABC: Abandon Barriers of Communication! Local artists are invited to engage in conversation with Ms. Chevallier, as she shares her own experiences and skills on how to become an inspiration in one’s own community thorough working with students with disabilities.
Sunday April 10, 3-5 p.m., VSA SC, SCSDB and The Community Healing Arts Program will co-host a FREE two hour workshop for local artists at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind in Walker Hall. Signs will be posted to direct artists to the workshop once you are in the building.
Refreshments will be served.
The goal is to have other artists follow in Ms. Chevallier’s residency, working with the students at SCSDB and providing an inspiration to these young, talented, emerging artist in training!
